THE 6TH ANNUAL DIRT ORCAS SUMMER CLASSIC

SEPTEMBER 3 and 4th, 2022

In conjunction with Sun and Fun Motorsports, Jefferson County Ciderworks, Giant Loop Moto and Gerbing Heated Gear I am pleased to announce the 6TH Annual Dirt Orcas Summer Classic.

The event will take place Saturday September 3rd and Sunday September 4th 2022. If you aren’t familiar with the event, it’s a wonderful off-road motorcycle ride on mostly B-Roads and gravel from Iowa City to Jefferson County, Iowa that ends with a showing of the latest Backcountry Discovery Route documentary feature on an outdoor movie screen.

There will be water crossings and ample dirt under our tires, but this track will be doable for all adventure bikes with at least 50/50 tread. It’s not epic, but sometimes one day is just right.

We are tweaking the main route a bit to make it faster this year, but we are also adding a Sunday morning ride to the event that will take us from our campground on a loop ride down to the Missouri border and back to camp. This section will be about 2.5 hours and involve  50/50 pavement and gravel. Not to be missed.

We will also make available the alternative “road ride” that makes it a lot less difficult if we have poor conditions (Hello 2019!). I wanted to make sure people who have done this event in the past had a new experience and got to see some of the “better parts” of the track towards the end of the ride that they may not have seen in the past. Of course the entire off-road route will be available for those of us who want to ride it.

*Preregistration is required. Event will be capped at 50 riders.

EVENT SCHEDULE:

Saturday 11am – The event will begin at  Sun and Fun Motorsports in Iowa City. They will provide us with lunch while we check out new models from BMW, Triumph, Honda and others. I will also offer up some off-road tips and advice for those interested in how to navigate difficult situations on the trail. Later in the day we will have some friendly competitions for prizes.

1:00pm – We will break into groups and start the ride south towards Fairfield. The GPS will be available to everyone, but there will be 3 assigned group leaders who have the GPS tracks for the ride if you choose to just follow the group.

6pm – We will arrive at the campground just off the route. Dinner will be served. Beer and Jefferson County Ciderworks fantastic hard cider will be available.

7pm – Raffle drawing will commence and great prizes from our sponsors will be distributed to winners.

8pm – Once the sun sets, We will watch the latest Backcountry Discovery Route Movie, on the outdoor movie screen.

Tent camping is included with admission, but if you prefer to stay at a hotel there are several within a few miles of the campground.

Sunday 9am (UPDATE) – We will leave the campground and ride a very scenic gravel and paved route south to the Missouri Boarder. From there we will ride along the Des Moines river and loop back to the campground just before lunchtime. This ride is of course optional. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided when we stop for a quick break in the scenic town of Bentonsport.  Please note we will need to ride about 40 miles before coming across a convenience store to fuel up. So people will need to make sure they add fuel Saturday before the end of the ride if they do not have the range to make this section.
